Qualifications:
Advanced Research Methods in Biotechnology is a heavily hands-on course focusing on chemical and biochemical instrumentation typically used in the biotech industry. The student will gain experience using such instruments as a liquid- and gas-chromatography (LC- or GC-) mass spectrometer (MS), and isothermal titration calorimeter (ITC), high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), NMR and other related tools. The lecture portion will focus either on instrumental operation and function (e.g., how high pressure is achieved for HPLC) or how that instrument is used in biotechnology (e.g., how HPLC can identify and quantify illicit drugs).
This course is taught in a hybrid format during the 2025 Fall term (August 25, 2025 - December 14, 2025). The lecture is taught online on Wednesdays from 6:00 - 7:30 pm, and the lab is taught in person on Saturdays from 12:00 - 4:00 pm.
In addition to teaching, the instructor is expected to hold regular office hours (a minimum of one hour per week) in order to provide students with support outside of the classroom.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related area with postdoctoral research/industry experience. Candidates should also have familiarity with online/hybrid instruction.
This position requires all coursework to be performed in the state of California.
The salary range for this position is $9,932 - $13,744 (4 units) and is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here.
